Closely following the seawall between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth, the railway at Dawlish was built in the 1840's by Brunel and is still in use today. With sea-levels predicted to rise due to climate change, there is a need to know when offshore conditions will result in excessive overtopping rates, causing disruption to rail services and endangering passengers.

This project has involved using the OpenWEB SDK to wrap two existing numerical codes - one a wave shoaling / refracting engine, the other an overtopping model - to allow them to be integrated with a powerful wave prediction model, SWAN.
 
By wrapping site-specific code, it has been possible to create a suite of generic tools that can be used to solve complex problems. This project has shown that a minimum of targeted effort can greatly extend a model's usefulness, allowing complex problems to be solved using simple underlying tools.
